Arctic field tests examine sensors and communication through ice

MIT researchers report field work on sensing beneath Arctic ice and communicating across the ice boundary. The team integrated available sensors, recorded underwater sound and tested a magneto-inductive communication approach. The conditions make reliable power and connectivity unusually demanding. These tests illustrate why environmental constraints must shape a sensor network from its earliest design decisions.
