Microsoft Research describes RetroChimera, research developed with pharmaceutical partners to plan chemical synthesis routes. The approach combines AI models and search to work backwards from a target molecule towards possible ingredients and reactions. Evaluation includes expert assessment. Laboratory validation remains an important next step: a promising proposed route is not yet a proven manufacturing process or a new medicine.
